The Work

Walls That Solve a Grade Problem

Ohio Valley lots are rarely flat. A driveway cut, a walk-out basement, or a backyard that falls away from the house all need a wall that actually holds soil — not a decorative stack that leans after the first winter.

Bradley Lawn-Scape builds block walls and boulder walls as their own hardscape jobs. We look at height, drainage behind the wall, and how the wall meets the lawn and pavement before a line is set.

Every wall we build is made to handle Ohio Valley freeze-and-thaw winters. Base, drainage stone, and a clean cap matter more here than they do in a catalog photo.

Why It Matters

Why the Wall Has to Be Built as a Wall

A planter that is only stacked block will lean. Water has to have a place to go behind the wall, and the first course has to sit on a compacted base, not on topsoil.

Doing that work once is less expensive than rebuilding a failed wall in three years — and it keeps soil off the driveway and out of the garage door.

What's Included

What a Retaining Wall Job Includes

The estimate is for the wall, the base, and the drainage. Planting above or below the wall is listed separately so you can see the cost of each part.

  • Site measure with wall height and length
  • Excavation and compacted base
  • Drainage stone and outlet where the height requires it
  • Block or boulder construction with a finished cap
  • Backfill and lawn or bed restoration along the wall

How It Works

How It Works

  1. 1

    Measure the Grade

Height and run decide the product and whether engineering review is needed on taller walls.

  2. 2

    Set the Base

The first course sits on compacted stone, not on dirt that will settle.

  3. 3

    Build and Drain

Block or boulder goes up with drainage stone behind it so water does not push the wall out.

  4. 4

    Cap and Restore

The cap is set, backfill is packed, and the lawn or bed is put back against the new line.

Timing

When Walls Can Go In

Walls can run through a longer season than planting. We stop when the ground is frozen or too wet to compact a base.

If the wall is part of a larger landscape install, we schedule the wall first so plantings are not sitting in a construction zone.

Questions

Common Questions About Retaining Walls

Block or Boulder?

Block is cleaner against a driveway or garage. Boulder looks more natural in a front-yard grade. We will recommend one after we see the site.

Do You Need a Permit?

Taller walls and walls near property lines can trigger local rules. We flag that on the estimate when it applies.

Can a Wall Be Added to a Refresh?

Yes, when it is a short planter or edge wall. A full bank wall is its own job.

Can I have landscaping done and stay on the lawn program?

Yes. Many customers use us for both. Each service is priced separately on your estimate.
